Bruce nuclear reactor shut down again

TIVERTON -- A unit at Bruce nuclear power plant only just returned to service after a two-week outage was abruptly taken down yesterday and will likely stay that way for about 10 days.

Engineers were trying to find out exactly what the issue was with the system that carries hot water at Unit 6, a 822-megawatt reactor, but there were no environmental or safety issues, a spokesperson said.

The outage at the Bruce B reactor is forecast to last less than two weeks. On June 8, the unit was taken down suddenly and kept out of service until June 20 while maintenance was performed.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Energy Board announced electricity bills across the province will drop by about one per cent this fall due to reduced transmission rates for utilities. The reduction will benefit both business and residential customers, and is to take effect after Nov. 1.
