Plug-Pulled on Nanticoke Nuclear Plant... Reaction

CD98: Renee Berube - July 24, 2009

Whether you're relieved or upset by the news - everyone this morning is talking about the fact that Bruce Power has withdrawn it's application to build a nuclear facility in Port Dover. They have stopped their Environmental Assessment - instead focusing on refurbishing their reactors in Tiverton. Mayor Dennis Travale says while it is disappointing news because of the loss of potential new jobs, it isn't completely unexpected given the state of the economy. Meanwhile, the Grand Erie Energy Quest group was pleasantly caught of guard. They just formed a new local group earlier this week, determined to keep Bruce Power out of Nanticoke Park. Spokesperson Jim Elve says our local economy would have been harder hit if a nuclear plant went up along the shores of Lake Erie: according to their research retirees would stop moving to the area, and families already living here would relocate out of fear that there could be an accident.

Coming up later today on CD 98.9... with the Liberal Government planning to phase out coal production by 2014, the Grand Erie Energy Quest has a suggestion on what could be done using that parcel of land to move power production forward and create jobs.

The Bruce Power purse is now closed. Bruce Power as a private corporation has been very generous in the past few months donating to Norfolk charities. They always indicated that they were just “community building” with their large $$ donations. What we had was an information operations project costing big dollars with the expressed purpose of overwhelming the public and pressuring local government to sign on the dotted line. Look a Germany's model of renewable energy. Their clean simple options have replaced ALL the nuclear power plants in that country. Have a close look at the "debt retirement" charge on your hydro bill. You're still paying for the folly and lies of Darlington & Pickering multiple cost overruns. Bruce Power’s $$$ ultimately comes from electricity users. Remember what's happened here for the future. Big corporations wanting government to sign on the dotted line to provide them with an income is not your friend.

The debt retirement charge you see is the folly of OPG not a private corp.

Are you suggesting that any corp that gives to the community (community building) such as McDonald's, Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire are doing so with devious purpose?

Just asking.

By the way, Germany imports most of its power from the nuclear reactors of France.

"Are you suggesting that any corp that gives to the community (community building) such as McDonald's, Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire are doing so with devious purpose?"

"Just asking."

How dumb... The above businesses are already part of the community, they do not have hidden agendas and are not trying to buy their way in.

The obvious is what people will take caution over.
