Public Meeting to Discuss Ontario Green Energy Act

For Immediate Release

April 14, 2009

Citizens Groups to Host Information Session

Simcoe — April 14, 2009 — Grand Erie Energy Quest (GEEQ), a local group focussed on energy options in the wake of the proposed closure of the Nanticoke Generating Station, is co-sponsoring a public meeting to inform citizens about the new Green Energy Act (GEA) that is currently before the Ontario Legislature. GEEQ is partnering with the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA), the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and Niagara Windpower Inc. to hold the meeting at the Simcoe Recreation Centre next Tuesday evening, April 21st, starting at 6:30 PM.

The meeting will include presentations by each of the sponsoring groups, as well as a question and answer session where residents can ask about or comment on provisions of the GEA. Printed literature will be available from each of the host groups. The meeting will conclude with mingling and refreshments provided by GEEQ.

“Our organization was approached by some local residents who noticed that other areas were holding these types of events and asking if we could do something in Haldimand-Norfolk. This fits right in with GEEQ’s mandate and we are excited about working together with these other groups,” said Jim Elve, one of the GEEQ members. “There have been a number of letters to the editor in our local papers and some local online discussion regarding the Green Energy Act. This meeting will help residents get answers and make their opinions known.”

Public Education and Input Needed

The Green Energy Act is aimed at making renewable energy and conservation high priorities for Ontario. There was some fanfare with the February release of the draft bill and the legislation is moving forward towards enactment later this year. Citizen input is sought and the April 21st meeting is aimed at getting input in addition to delivering information.

Admission to the meeting is free and everyone is welcome.
