Bruce is best site for nuclear reactor, says Lamont
Shoreline Beacon: PAT HALPIN - May 7, 2008
A spokesman for Bruce Power told Bruce County council that Ontario faces big decisions this year on its electricity supply.
The province has to decide how much power it needs - and how much of that will be from new generating units, Ross Lamont said during an update on Bruce Power's projects and accomplishments.
"They have to come to some decisions on the technology," Lamont said about issues facing the province as it grapples to meet energy needs.
"They have a process going forward with that right now. They also have to make some decisions with respect to the where and who (will do a new build)."
The province may decide to put new nuclear units at more than one site but Bruce Power is lobbying to be at the top of the list when that multi-billion-dollar investment is announced.
"Certainly the where and how is something that we're very interested in of course," Lamont said. "We believe the Bruce site is the best site in Ontario for the first new build."
The newly-launched Citizens for Bruce C is rallying support to bring new build to the Bruce site.
Residents have to make their support vocal if that effort is to succeed, Lamont said.
So far, Bruce County has given verbal support to Bruce Power and the Citizens for Bruce C in their lobby efforts.
