Four Companies In Running To Build Ontario's New Nuclear Reactors
National Post: March 08, 2008
Ontario's Minister of Energy said four companies are in the running to build the province's new nuclear reactors. AREVA, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Westinghouse Electric Co. have been asked to submit proposals, Gerry Phillips said yesterday. The competition will be managed by Infrastructure Ontario and include representatives from the Energy and Finance ministries, Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation. A decision review board and fairness monitor will oversee the process to ensure it is "rigorous" and in the best interest of Ontarians, Mr. Phillips said. The Organization of Candu Industries, representing 101 domestic companies supplying Candu reactors, is lobbying the province to "shop Ontario" and choose the Crown-owned AECL and its ACR 1,000 Advanced Candu reactor.
