MINISTER LUNN'S NUCLEAR WASTE DECISION: UNSAFE, UNCLEAN AND UNRELIABLE

Sierra Club of Canada News Release: Friday, June 15, 2007

(Ottawa) Storing nuclear waste in centralized facilities while promoting new nuclear power plants would be a big expensive mistake, says the Sierra Club of Canada.

"Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn' plan will solve neither the environmental, nor the health or safety problems of nuclear power, as the most radioactive fuel will remain above ground near the reactors and more nuclear waste will be generated," said Stephen Hazell, executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada.

"In its desperate bid to avoid effective action on climate change, the federal government is trying to sell Canadians on big spending on nuclear power," said Emilie Moorhouse, atmosphere and energy campaigner for the Sierra Club of Canada. "Nuclear power is inherently risky, expensive, and inefficient power source, and will not solve the climate crisis."

Many studies have concluded that nuclear power cannot deliver the greenhouse gas reductions on a scale and time frame necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change. In fact, expanding nuclear power would actually prevent more rapid and effective greenhouse gas reductions by diverting funds away from the most cost effective technologies such as energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy.

Storing nuclear waste underground is inherently risky, as no repository system is able to isolate the waste from human and natural environments for the millions of years it remains radioactive

"Nuclear power adds more problems while preventing effective action against global warming," said Jean Langlois, national campaigns director for the Sierra Club of Canada. "The worst legacy we could leave to future generations would be to make them bear the burden of both mistakes."
